Revival Time! Set then let...
This last week we had our first scheduled church revival in four years. The guests were none other than Dr. and Mrs. Hodge. They were such a blessing to have near! Matt and I worked each day, so we didn't get to spend as much time with them as we would have liked. I guess we'll have to schedule a trip to West Virginia if we plan to get some quality Grandma and Grandpa time!
The first message of the revival is what really stood out to me. Grandpa preached from Colossians 3:1-16. Many of these verses are very well known, but sometimes it's helpful to look at them from a different perspective. Colossians 3:2 says, "Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth." One would probably have a hard time finding a Christian who doesn't know this verse, but let's see if you viewed it the same way I did.
What does the word set mean? In school I had to write sentences using certain words. Set - "I set the baby gently on the bed." Set - "Will you please set the table for me?" Set so often is used in a passive way, so it's not surprising that in Colossians 3, we view setting our affections on Christ as a passive verb. However this is actually an aggressive word. If you can picture a football team getting ready for a play, the quarterback prepares his team for each play by yelling, "SET, SET..."
The Christian life is not easy! It's not an easy thing to live a separated life. It just isn't like setting a table. Instead it takes the intense passion that a football player feels for keeping a hold of that leather ball and getting it into the end zone! Sounds exhausting when you compare that with the passive way we sometimes view the Christian life. It is hard. It is work. But it is worth it!
Colossians 3:18 says, "And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful." Here's the good news! After you "SET!" - you can "let." This is where you can give everything over to God. You can honestly say, "God, I am doing my part. I am SETTING my affections, my thoughts, my desires on you. Now let your peace fill me."
